First building of SSMI

45 Kozlovskaya Street, Volgograd

1937

On September 20, 1935, the Stalingrad Medical Institute accepted its first 172 students. Classes were organized on the basis of the Workers’ Faculty, the Pedagogical Institute and the Institute of Marxism-Leninism. At the same time, the construction of the Medical Institute's academic building began in Voroshilovsky district, on the site of the modern hostel No. 3 on Kozlovskaya Street. In May 1937, the first stage of the new theoretical building was put into operation, the main pride of which was the three-light lecture hall – the glazed ceiling made it possible to maximize the use of natural light at any time. Tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, a bike track, and treadmills were added near the theoretical building. In the garden of the new building, students liked to relax and prepare for exams. At the end of August 1942, during a barbaric bombardment, the institute’s building was completely destroyed.

In a letter from Kuibyshev on May 23, 1944, Professor Arnold Iosifovich Bernstein wrote: "When the bombing started, I went to the institute, where I called all the professors, assistants and students. When the institute burned down, one group and I with great difficulty crossed to the other river bank on August 28 and headed for Saratov, where we reached on September 5. Those who have survived this crossing are tenacious, and they will never be afraid of anything in their lives. It's the worst thing that ever happened. I will never forget the experience of the bombing on the Volga River crossing. Hell seems like a resort to me compared to what we were through".

Educational building No. 2

3 Pugachevskaya Street, Volgograd

1947

The building on Pugachevskaya Street was built in the late XIX - early XX century. It is an object of cultural heritage of regional significance. The former residential building is one of the few that survived the Battle of Stalingrad. Since 1947, the main base of the medical Institute was located here, where 7 departments of theoretical disciplines were located. The building was in need of restoration for decades. The global renovation of this facility was included in the list of major infrastructure projects identified by the Chancellor of VolgSMU Vladimir Shkarin in 2019. During the restoration work, the exterior appearance of the building and the decorations of the facades were completely restored. The fragment of a brick fence, the entrance gate with a wrought-iron grating and the arched gate are unique elements of this monument to the history of Tsaritsyn architecture. The historical building on Pugachevskaya Street currently houses a simulation pharmacy of VolgSMU and a training base for clinical engineers.

Main building

1 Pavshikh Bortsov Square, Volgograd

1960

The six-story building of the Regional Higher Party School named after Stalin was built in 1950. The project was created by prominent Soviet architects Vasily Simbirtsev and Yefim Levitan. Levitan received the Stalin’s Prize for Architecture, II degree for it. The building of the party school passed to the Stalingrad Medical Institute in 1960 as the most damaged one during the Great Patriotic War. Since that time, the building on Pavshikh Bortsov Square has always been the main building of the university, and its image has become the “business card" of the university and adorns the offices of many alumni around the world. In 2025, the architectural masterpiece of Simbirtsev and Levitan was restored for the first time.

Sports and recreation camp of VolgSMU

Volgograd region, Sredneakhtubinsky district, Kuibyshev settlement, 47 Oktyabrskaya Street

1968

The history of the medical sports and recreation camp began in 1968, when the first tent camp appeared on the Akhtuba River, in the village of Kuibyshev in the Sredneakhtubinsky district. In 1971, a guest house and playgrounds for sports games were built. And already in 1976, the camp of the Medical Institute took the 2nd place in the review competition for the best staging of health and mass sports work among medical universities of the USSR. In 1981, a 2-storey dormitory student building was put into operation. In 1984-1986, the work of the sports and recreation camp was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Healthcare of the USSR – the institute was awarded the Honorary Red Banner. Currently, the sports and recreation camp has become a stationary recreation center, where more than 500 people annually improve their health. In the summer camp of VolgSMU, specialized shifts are held, during which students learn project thinking, organize scientific, creative and sports forums.

Hostel No. 3

The five-story building of the VolgSMU dormitory No. 3 on Kozlovskaya Street was built in 1970. The building contains not only living rooms and leisure areas, but also library offices, a reading room, an Internet class, and the premises of the Department of General and Clinical Psychology. Morphological building

1g Rokossovsky street, Volgograd

1985

One of the key bases of VolgSMU is the morphological building. Its construction began in 1985 on the initiative of Chancellor N. P. Grigorenko. The building is equipped with two modern operating rooms with tables, surgical lights with the function of broadcasting video to the screen, modern medical equipment is installed, classrooms are equipped with multimedia systems, new furniture and computers. Students can study anatomy not only from atlases, but also with the help of three-dimensional visualization. New educational technologies after the re-equipment of the morphological building, which began in 2022, became available to the departments of biology; anatomy; pathological anatomy; operative surgery and topographic anatomy; histology, embryology, cytology and others.

Hostel No. 1

The building contains not only modern residential rooms, but also leisure areas, as well as several co-working spaces for creativity. Students have the opportunity to visit a darts center, an electronic shooting range and a gym. There is a cyber club with modern powerful computers, large monitors and comfortable sofas, which contributes to the development of such areas as digital sports at the university.

Dental Clinic and Diagnostic Center of VolgSMU

10 Herzen Street, Volgograd

1999

The first dental polyclinic of VolgSMU was opened in 1999 to train dental specialists. The building where the new base of the Volgograd State Medical Academy was located appeared on the city map in 1992 and was intended for organizing the activities of Volgograd scientists. At the turn of the century, the premises were given to the Volgograd Academy of Public Administration and the Volgograd State Medical Academy for joint use.

In 2022, the polyclinic became part of the Dental Clinic and Diagnostic Center of VolgSMU, which includes two more separate divisions in the Kirovsky and Sovetsky districts of Volgograd. The center provides medical and advisory assistance to adults and children.

Academic building No. 5

20 Kim Street, Volgograd

1999

The building was constructed in 1959. In 1999, by order of the State Property Management Committee of the Volgograd region, it was given to the Medical Academy. In 2024, a large-scale overhaul of this educational building was carried out. To improve the quality of the educational process, modern educational furniture, interactive whiteboards and projectors were installed in the classrooms. In addition to the Department of Pharmacology and Bioinformatics, a number of other departments of the university also occupied the renovated premises. The Family Medicine Clinic of VolgSMU, located on the 1st floor of the building, received additional space.

Multi-profile Clinic No. 1 of Volgograd State Medical University

64 Nikitin Street, Volgograd

2004

Multi-profile Clinic No. 1 of VolgSMU has been providing medical care, including high-tech one, to the population of different regions of the country since 2005. Unique minimally invasive cardiovascular surgeries and protocols of in vitro fertilization programs for infertility are performed here.

Hostel No. 4

8 Hiroshima Street, Volgograd

The well-known "house with palms" in Volgograd appeared on the city maps in 2001. In 2022, for the first time, major repairs were made to rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and areas for organized leisure activities. The renovated hostel offers comfortable living conditions for both Russian and international students. Students will be able to spend their free time in the assembly hall, which is supplied with interactive equipment, a mobile stage and conference furniture. Students living in dormitory No. 4 also have the opportunity to do sports. The gym and fitness room are equipped with new fitness equipment. After the renovation, the hostel has auditoriums for classes, a co-working space with Wi-Fi and food court areas.

Educational building No. 6

45 Dzerzhinskiy Street, Volgograd

The two-story building was built in 1965. Today, not only the academic building No. 6 is located here, but also the publishing house of VolgSMU.

Educational building No. 7

49 Degtyareva Street, Volgograd

2008

In the Traktorozavodsky district of Volgograd, at 49 Degtyareva Street, there is a Simulation center for pre-medical care and accreditation of secondary vocational education specialists. The building was put into operation in 1957 and belonged to the Volgograd Aluminum Plant – there was a kindergarten, and then a hotel of this industrial enterprise. In 2008, the premises were given to the Volgograd Medical University. Since 2017, the Interdepartmental Center for the Formation of Practical Skills and the educational building No. 7 of VolgSMU have been functioning here.

After a major renovation in 2023, the center was equipped with new educational, cabinet and medical furniture, as well as modern simulation equipment, thanks to which students can practice the skills of caring for seriously ill patients, performing injections, helping in emergency situations, performing physical examinations, intubation, catheterization, probing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. There are places for training to help patients who are outside the premises.

Sports and Recreation Complex "Volgomed"

Construction of the VolgSMU sports and recreation complex began in late November 2015 and was completed a year later. The commissioning permit was obtained on December 28, 2016.

SRC "Volgomed" is a sports complex that includes a swimming pool with 6 lanes of 25 m each, showers, changing rooms, a gym, a fitness room, inventory, medical and administrative premises, dressing rooms, a buffet and other premises. SRC "Volgomed" was created as part of the implementation of the social targeted program of the party "United Russia" "500 swimming pools for universities".

Scientific Center of Innovative Medicines of VolgSMU

The Scientific Center for Innovative Medicines of VolgSMU was established in 2018. The center was created to provide a full cycle of preclinical research and release of experimental batches of medicines. It is equipped with modern highly efficient scientific, analytical, and high-tech production equipment. Its presence makes it possible to develop new original innovative medicines on the basis of the center, as well as to train specialists in various medical, biological and pharmaceutical areas. The scientific equipment of SCIM laboratories is used in the educational process, as well as in extracurricular activities – for mastering modern high-tech methods and conducting research.

Educational building No. 8 of VolgSMU

10b building 2 Komsomolskaya Street, Volgograd

2018

The building of VolgSMU on Komsomolskaya Street is one of the few buildings of the old Tsaritsyn, preserved after the Great Patriotic War, the only surviving house on Mariinsky Street (the former Preobrazhensky quarter of Tsaritsyn). For many years, Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing units were located here. After the completion of renovation works in 2023, the Department of Russian Language and Socio-Cultural Adaptation of VolgSMU is located in the mansion at 10b Komsomolskaya Street.

Center for Electronic Medical Education of VolgSMU

The building in Dzerzhinsky district was given to Volgograd State Medical University in 2019. Before that, for many years there had been a drug treatment dispensary here. After the reconstruction, the Center for Electronic Medical Education was created within its walls. It provides practical training at all levels of education at VolgSMU using simulation equipment and distance learning technologies, as well as organizational and technical support for the accreditation of specialists in clinical specialties.

Three thousand specialists receive training and advanced training at CEME VolgSMU every year. The four-story building has 37 simulation rooms, treatment and examination rooms, as well as intensive care and specialized care wards. All this makes it possible to bring the educational process as close as possible to the conditions of a real medical institution.

This is the only and first medical e-learning center of this scale in Russia that meets the highest requirements.

Dental Clinic and Diagnostic Center of VolgSMU (Separate structural division No. 1)

On November 10, 2004, a Training and Production Pharmacy of VolgSMU was organized in the Kirovsky district of Volgograd, where students of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Medical College received training and practical training. In 2022, it was decided to create a separate structural division of the Dental Clinic and Diagnostic Center of VolgSMU in the Kirovsky district. The premises have been renovated by designers, equipped with an open reception area and spacious rooms for clinical appointments, supplied with modern equipment.

Medical hospital of VolgSMU

45-47 Sovetskaya Street, Volgograd

The buildings of the former City Hospital No. 3 are part of the complex of architectural and urban planning monuments of regional significance.

The complex of buildings on Sovetskaya Street was given to the university by the regional authorities in early 2023.

In 2024, a large-scale renovation of the new hospital began.

After the renovation, a polyclinic department, treatment rooms and functional diagnostics rooms, a day hospital with 4 wards, as well as a neurocenter will be opened here. Patients will be received by therapists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, allergists, otorhinolaryngologists, dermatovenerologists and doctors of other specialties.

In the building on 47 Sovetskaya Street, in addition to the polyclinic reception rooms and a 24-bed hospital, an operating unit, a resuscitation and intensive care unit, and training facilities for medical students are planned.

The opening of the new multi-profile medical center of VolgSMU, which will be created as a result of the merger of Clinic No. 1 and the former City Hospital No. 3, is scheduled for 2026.

Dental Clinic and Diagnostic Center of VolgSMU (Separate structural division No. 2)

On May 11, 2022, Clinical Dental Polyclinic No. 10 was given to Volgograd State Medical University and became part of the Dental Clinical and Diagnostic Center as a Separate structural division No. 2.

In 2024, a comprehensive renovation was completed here, the premises are equipped with new dental units and ergonomic furniture. Highly qualified patient care is provided by professors, associate professors and assistants of the Departments of Dentistry of VolgSMU. It includes detailed consultation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of dental diseases, correction of malocclusion of any complexity.
